January Featured Pillow - Catarina
While on medical mission in San Pedro La Laguna, Guatemala, a 92 year old woman named Catarina, with an outfit and personality so vibrant and beautiful came in to the clinic to be seen. Cathy asked a translator if Catarina was a weaver. After confirming Catarina was in fact a weaver, Cathy visited her home and watched as she wove on the back-strap loom. Cathy purchased the textile Catarina wove and later made it into one of her pillows.
Two years later, now present day, we had Mynor, our ground photographer in San Pedro, take a few photos and videos of Catarina.
The weaving technique Catarina is doing (in video link below) is something she learned a long time ago. She weaves to support herself, especially after the loss of her husband. She recalls being taught to weave at a young age because it was the only way to feed herself at the time and she thanks God that she is still able to do it today.
We are thankful for all of the artists we work with in Guatemala. Whether it’s from purchasing textiles or paying for photos, supporting these artists is a huge part of our mission.
Our pillow, Catarina, is all natural cotton, woven on a back-strap loom. It is tightly woven, featuring bright pops of color. The colors are so vibrant due to being naturally dyed from fruits and vegetables.
